Zensho Holdings, known for "Hama Sushi" and "Sukiya," has acquired the Snowfox Group—a sushi operator headquartered in Texas, USA, that operates 3,000 sushi retail outlets in North America and the UK—for 621 million USD (about 86.89 billion yen).
Through this acquisition, Zensho Holdings will be able to utilize the Snowfox Group's manufacturing systems and restaurant functions, as well as its regional advantages and brands, further strengthening Zensho Holdings' global strategy for its food and beverage business.
The Snowfox Group is barely known in Japan, but globally it possesses four different Japanese-food brands—"Snowfox," "Bento," "Taiko" and "YO!"—and has established itself as a global Japanese-food company.
Whether the group's retail outlets and restaurants will be replaced by Zensho's existing brands such as "Hama Sushi," or whether they will continue to maintain their original brands, is not yet clear at this point. However, there is no doubt that this new, massive acquisition drama will greatly affect Zensho Holdings' global strategy.
Furthermore, these movements will surely have a certain impact on the global sushi market, not only on competitors that emphasize global strategy such as Sushiro and Kura Sushi.
We will be watching future developments closely.
