【English Name】Fukui

Fukui refers to Fukui Prefecture, one of Japan's prefectures, and to its prefectural capital, Fukui City.

During the Edo period, the Fukui Domain was established, and historically Fukui Castle was built as a fortress in Echizen Province. The provincial name Echizen is still sometimes used for the region's marine product brands, and it is considered a region with deep ties to sushi.

Located on the Sea of Japan side, Fukui Prefecture is known as a land blessed with abundant marine resources. The designation "Echizen-mono" (Echizen products) seen in sushi restaurants derives from this region.

Note that the place name "Fukui" also exists throughout the country, such as in Nishi Ward of Sapporo City (Hokkaido), Nishikan Ward of Niigata City (Niigata Prefecture), Ibaraki City (Osaka Prefecture), and Himeji City (Hyogo Prefecture); the abundance of identically named places is one of its features.
