Sushi Cake
【Reading】すしけーき
【English Name】Sushi cake
Sushi cake refers to a dish made by shaping sushi materials such as vinegared rice and sashimi into a cake mold and finishing it. For celebrations such as birthdays and Hinamatsuri, it is widely beloved mainly at home for the purpose of pursuing a gorgeous appearance. The combination of "cake" and "sushi" appears in diverse contexts. At conveyor-belt sushi chains, cakes are lined up on the lane as desserts, occupying a firm position as a sweet menu item other than sushi. Major chains such as Hama Sushi also incorporate cakes into their menus.
Meanwhile, in the world of Western confectionery, there exists a genre called "impostor cupcakes," in which cupcakes are crafted to look exactly like sushi. They are made into sushi shapes after baking the cake batter, and the device of enjoying the surprise of the appearance has gathered popularity.
Also, as with "diaper sushi," in which diapers are shaped to imitate sushi, gift products shaped like sushi are spreading in the baby-goods field as well. The shape of sushi, like cake, readily links to an image of "celebration," and various derivative expressions continue to be born one after another.
