【English Name】Toyosu

Toyosu in Koto Ward, Tokyo, is an area that holds a special presence in the sushi industry as the site of "Toyosu Market." In October 2018, Tsukiji Market in Chuo Ward closed, and the function of the wholesale base was handed over to this place. Occupying a corner of the central wholesale market operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, it functions as a large-scale gathering and distribution point for marine products arriving from all over Japan.

The market grounds were originally the site of a factory where Tokyo Gas had once carried out gas production. In the preparatory stage for relocation, harmful substances including arsenic, cyanide, and benzene were detected in the soil at levels far exceeding the standards, greatly stirring public opinion. Tokyo Gas revealed the fact of contamination in 2001, and in 2007 benzene at as much as 1,000 times the standard value was also confirmed. Afterward, the market opened after completing decontamination work.

The place name "Toyosu" was born in Showa 12, 1937. It was named with a prayer that this land would prosper richly. To begin with, this whole area is artificial land created using rubble left by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. In the lot adjacent to the market, the commercial and bathing facility "Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai" also opened, raising its presence as a tourist attraction as well.

The nearest station is Shijo-mae on the Yurikamome line, and it can also be reached from Toyosu Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho line.
