Kinkai-mono — Nearshore Catch

【Reading】きんかいもの

【English Name】coastal catch

"Kinkai-mono" is a collective term for fish and shellfish caught along Japan's coasts and nearshore waters, and is a term used in the sushi industry to indicate highly fresh toppings.

Generally it refers to seafood landed within Japan's exclusive economic zone or the range of coastal fisheries, carrying the connotation of distinguishing it from deep-sea-caught or imported products. At sushi shops, the notation "kinkai-mono" is often used to indicate that the ingredient is fresh material procured directly from domestic fishing ports.

Antonymous expressions include "enyo-mono" (deep-sea) and "yunyu-mono" (imported), which indicate differences in place of origin and distribution route. Representative sushi toppings caught in nearshore waters span a wide range, including silver-skinned fish (hikari-mono) such as horse mackerel (aji), sardine (iwashi), and mackerel (saba), white-fleshed fish such as flounder (hirame) and sea bream (tai), as well as shrimp and squid.

Because the species caught vary by season and sea area, the lineup of kinkai-mono reflects the sea conditions of that period, serving as one indicator for enjoying seasonal flavors.
