【English Name】Tsukiji Outer Market

A shopping district spread across Tsukiji, Chuo Ward, Tokyo, that developed adjacent to the former Tsukiji Central Wholesale Market (the inner market). While the inner market functioned as a professionals-only trading floor for wholesalers and intermediate wholesalers, the outer market (jogai) played its own distinct role as a commercial area lined with retail shops and restaurants catering to buyers.

When the inner market opened in 1935 (Showa 10), food and tool shops naturally began to gather in the surrounding area, giving rise to the prototype of today's outer market. In 1993 (Heisei 5), a shopping district promotion association was established, providing an organized operational foundation.

Even after the Tsukiji wholesale market relocated to Toyosu in October 2018, the outer market has continued to operate on site. On October 1 of that year, the new facility "Tsukiji Uogashi" had its grand opening, where, among other things, fresh fish is sold by people with experience as intermediate wholesalers.

Lined with specialty shops handling foods and tools deeply connected to sushi, such as fresh fish, dried goods, nori, tea, and knives, it is known as an indispensable procurement spot for sushi chefs and cooks. In recent years, many tourists from Japan and abroad have come to visit, and the number of restaurants, including sushi shops, has increased.
