【English Name】Misaki port

Misaki Port is the common name for a fishing port located in Miura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, officially called Misaki Fishing Port. Known as one of the nation's foremost designated class-3 fishing ports, it is widely recognized as a major landing base for tuna.

Its history as a fishing village is old, said to have begun when fishermen from the Kii Peninsula migrated there during the Onin era of the Muromachi period. In the Edo period it prospered as a port of call for cargo ships, and by the end of the Meiji era it had become established as a base for tuna fishing boats. In Taisho 11 (1922), a town-operated fish market was opened, and before the war it became a major hub of distant-water tuna fishing. In March 2018, a wholesale market dedicated to frozen tuna was newly built.

Misaki no maguro (Misaki tuna) is established as a production-area brand, and many restaurants serving tuna dishes gather around the port. Note that the sushi chain Kaisen Misakiko is a conveyor-belt sushi business with Kyotaru as its operating parent, and it has now been renamed Kaiten-zushi Misaki.

Also, a fishing port of the same name, Misaki Port, exists in Ikata Town, Ehime Prefecture as well.
