Kote-gaeshi — Small Hand Turn (Nigiri Technique)
【Reading】こてがえし
【English Name】Kotegaeshi
Kotegaeshi is one of the joint-locking techniques handed down in aikido, Shorinji Kempo, Japanese jujutsu, and the like. It is a technique that throws the opponent while twisting the wrist, and it is said to place a strong load on the tendons and ligaments of the wrist and elbow. It is also a representative technique applying the wristlock (the general term for techniques that lock the wrist). In judo, records remain of it as one of the techniques that existed in the dawn of the art, but it is not included in the current Kodokan kimewaza (the official list of techniques). Also, kotegaeshi appears in the literature as another name for udegaeshi, a variation of the side sacrifice technique yokowakare, but this is considered a different technique from the kotegaeshi of aikido.
Among the forty-eight techniques of arm wrestling, there is also a technique named tsukidashi kotegaeshi. Thus, techniques bearing the name kotegaeshi can be found across multiple fields of martial arts and combat sports, but the content of each technique differs.
